Melissa Weiss. Wood-fire & reduction-fire potter. Asheville, NC.
Biography. Melissa was born in NY. She spent half of her life in the bay area of California and the other half in NYC. She graduated with a BFA in Photography from the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan. In 2000 she left NYC and roamed around, living in Maine, Alaska and many states in between. She settled in Asheville in 2005 with her husband, daughter and two dogs. "My first experience with clay was shortly after having a baby. It let me find the sanity I had lost with motherhood. I make pots to let the world disappear. Clay makes me feel calm, centered and right. In the short time I have been working with clay it has not failed to inspire, motivate, and frustrate me daily. The pots which have continued to influence my own aesthetic consist of smooth and shiny gas reduction fired pots and gritty, rough wood fired pots. I have an equal attraction to both processes and pledge allegiance to neither."
