Melissa Weiss. Wood-fire potter. Asheville, NC.
Biography. Melissa was born in NY. She spent half of her life in the bay area of California and the other half in NYC. She graduated with a BFA in Photography from the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan. In 2000 she left NYC and roamed around, living in Maine, Alaska and many states in between. She settled in Asheville in 2005 with her husband, daughter and two dogs. "My first experience with clay was shortly after having a baby. Working with clay gave me a much needed outlet from the intensity of my new position in life. I make pots to let the world disappear. Clay makes me feel calm, centered and right. In the short time I have been working with clay it has not failed to inspire, motivate, and frustrate me daily. I began wood-firing in the spring of 2007, beginning a new way for me to finish my pots. Wood-firing pottery gave me the challenge and aesthetic I needed to grow. I am continually working with materials to find the ones best suited to the pots I want to make. I don't always know what those pots are until they come out of the kiln. The wood kiln is an exciting experience where every firing is different and every pot is unique. It's a process of making from start to finish that I can never entirely control. This is where my motivation is found. I can make pots everyday for the rest of my life and each one will be a learning, growing experience. I make pots to use. Pots to contain food and drink and sometimes the occasional treasure."
