Eric Knoche. Wood-fire ceramic artist. Asheville, North Carolina.
Biography. Eric Knoche touched clay for the first time seven years ago and has had dirty hands ever since. Originally from Minnesota, Eric took a roundabout path to his current residence in North Carolina which included extended stops in India, Thailand, New York and California. He also spent two months as a guest artist at Big Table Studios in Herman, NE during the construction and first firing of a large Japanese style wood fired kiln. In addition to playing with mud, he enjoys hiking, reading and checking the cloud formations for the face of Elvis. "My current body of work is a personal exploration of how form and spatial relationship resonate within the human spirit as well as an anthropological search for the meaning and beauty generated through the interaction of humans and objects. This investigation’s primary focus is the fundamental rhythms of the universe and life; the forces of creation and destruction. I currently utilize vessel forms as distillations of our common human meta-culture, both ancient and contemporary, into tangible and recognizable objects. However, I think of myself not only as a maker of physical objects, but also as a temporal artist, exploring and crafting the interaction between humans and objects through time. Ultimately, I am searching for a deeper understanding of the human spirit and its relationship to both the physical world and the natural rhythms of life."
